July 24, 2005: Early morning dive training was conducted on the Kankakee River. Divers trained to rescue swimmers during heavy river currents as well as diving for submerged victims.
The location was the Kankakee River. The first item of business is to calculate the speed of the current. Today's current measures just 1.5 knots. In many cases the river can dangerously exceed 3 knots. The LOFS Dive Team must train for these conditions.
The team practiced several surface rescue techniques. One and two victim senerios were used. Throw ropes, flotation devices, rescuer to victim swims, and more. Here a rescuer throws a rope to a second rescuer that has swan directly to the victim with a flotation device.
Here the rescuer secures the victim and the rescue rope and is pulled to the rivers shore.
Several search techniques were practiced. Here a technique is tried from the bow of the rescue boat.
The LOFS Dive Team trains to be ready for all types of emergencies. Whether conditions are calm or hazardous, water is clear or dark, temperature is warm or ice cold, or river is moving at a safe or dangerous speed.
